The Children of Hat Cottage - Elsa Beskow
When their mother rows to the mainland for the day, the children of Hat Cottage promise to be good. They try to be helpful by sweeping the chimney, then washing their clothes in the lake, but their good intentions soon turn to mayhem. What will happen when their mother comes home?
'Their was once a little man who lived in a mossy tree stump by a lake. He could mend shoes, make things out of wood, and he was very good at catching big fat trout from the lake. His tree-stump house was cosy and warm.
In the middle of the lake was a small island, where a little woman lived with her children...'
